And the winner is…Gabe! For the 2012 Hero Dog Award

Sgt. 1st Class Duane Brown

Retired Army Military Working Dog received top honors at the 2012  American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards premiering on the Hallmark Channel at 8 p.m EST., November 8.  The Hero dog Awards were created by the American  Humane Association to celebrate the devoted relationship between dogs and  people. Military working dog Gabe, and his owner Sgt. 1st Class Charles Shuck,  instructor at the United States Army Drill Sergeant School, Fort Jackson, South  Carolina, were named the 2012 American Humane Assoc. Dog of the Year. Gabe  deployed to Iraq with the duty to find hidden weapons and explosives and help keep our Nation’s Soldiers safe. While deployed, Gabe completed over 210  combat missions, discovering 26 explosive and weapons caches. Gabe and Shuck also spent time visiting wounded troops in combat hospitals and Iraqi children in elementary schools during the deployment. Gabe retired from the Army in 2009 and was adopted by his handler, Shuck. Now, Gabe has taken on a new mission  bringing awareness to our communities about the plight of shelter dogs, and the importance of adopting these very special canines into a forever home. The AHA awarded Gabe and Shuck $10,000 for being named 2012 American Hero Dog. The Duo is donating the prize money to the United States War Dogs Assoc.

American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards tonight!

Holly – Entry catagory: Service Dogs

The Hero Dog Awards were created by the American Humane Association to celebrate the powerful relationship between dogs and people. The annual national competition searches out and recognizes America’s Hero Dogs – often ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things, whether it’s saving lives on the battlefield, lending sight or hearing to a human companion, or just welcoming you home at the end of a hard day.

The 2012 Hero Dog Awards will be hosted by film and Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth. Chenoweth joins a roster of celebrity supporters of the Hero Dog Awards, including special honoree Betty White, red carpet host Joey Lawrence and celebrity judges Whoopi Goldberg, Victoria Stilwell, Candy Spelling, Miranda Lambert, Kristin Bauer Van Straten, Michelle Forbes, J.R. Martinez, Tinsley Mortimer, and Megyn Price, among many others.

Dogs may be nominated in eight categories for the Hero Dog Awards: Law Enforcement & Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; Hearing Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for ordinary dogs). Finalists in each category will be judged by a blue-ribbon panel consisting of both celebrities and animal experts, to determine the winning American Hero Dog.

Trupanion Pet Insurance, based in Ballard, WA will be attending.  Don’t miss the American Hero Dog awards premiering tonight, Thursday, November 8th on the Hallmark channel at 8/7pm central.
